Vancouver's Howe Sound is home to a wide and abundant variety of wildlife. Our mountains, rugged coastline, deep fjords and cold rich ocean currents provide the protection and food that the diverse array of birds and marine mammals need to survive. They adapt as seasons come and go, like the surf scoter ducks (right), that begin arriving in the fall in huge flocks that bob on the waves and hug the shoreline looking for mussels. The sound the flock makes as tens of thousands of birds take flight is hard to describe; a soft, hollow, and rhythmic eco covers the surface of the ocean. It's one of those unique sounds in nature that you never hear anywhere else, lasting only a few moments, and leaving you wondering if it ever happened at all.

If you want to experience some of the best wildlife viewing in Vancouver, try our Sea Safari Eco-Tour or rent one of our U-drive boats and bring your camera along. There is a good chance you'll record a great photograph for your collection. Harbour seals, marine birds, eagles, nesting sites, river otters and deer are common and close to the marina and Howe Sound. For additional wildlife pictures, check out our Photo Gallery.
