Howe Sound fishing activity report:
Fall fishing has wrapped up for another year. Even with the heavy rains that affected the Chinook fishery off the mouth of the Capilano, we had a fantastic fishery there this year. It was easily the best we have had in several years, and if those rains hadn't occurred, it could have been the best since the fishery was created in the late 90's. The largest percentage of the fish were 3-yr-olds (low to mid teenagers), so next fall we should see excellent returns of larger fish in the 20 to 30 lb class.
Around this time of year, the fish everyone is looking to catch is a “winter “ Chinook. While there are quite a few undersized fish around, there still is a chance to catch a fish between 8-12 lbs in the early part of the winter fishing months and occasionally a fish over 20 lbs is caught.
Look for these fish in the the usual southern Howe Sound spots like Tunstall Bay, Hutt Island, and Grace Island. There will be times when the action slows as Pacific Whiteside Dolphins move through the area, but if they don’t pass near the fishing areas the activity should pick back up. Also remember the moons play a role as dates around the full or new moon tend to have the most activity.
